About the artist
Anthony and his painting – Ngalyipy Jukurrpa (Snake Vine Dreaming)
Anthony Jangala Hargraves was born in Alice Springs where he went to school at Yirrara College. He now lives in Yuendumu with his wife and works full time with the Yuendumu Old Peoples Program at Purple House.
Ngalyipi Jukurrpa (Snake Vine Dreaming) depicted in Anthony’s painting, comes from Purturlu, 150km north of Yuendumu. ‘Ngalyipi’ is a green creeper that climbs up the trunks and branches of trees, found in sandy plains and sandhills. This plant is an important part of initiation ceremonies, repurposed as supports like shoulder straps to carry ‘parrja’ and ‘ngami’ (water carriers), and used for medicinal purposes, such as the vine for torniquets and leaves as bandages.
Anthony is the son of Thomas Jampijinpa Hargraves. His mother was Mini Michaels.
