How to catch yellowbelly?
Yellowbelly, or golden perch, are a popular Australian native species that can be caught on baits and lures. They are found both stocked and naturally occurring in many inland rivers and impoundments. Golden perch like to hide close to structure but will roam around searching for food after dark.
Casting for yellowbelly
Casting the snags is a great way to catch golden perch. It's important to get the lure as close as possible to the structure. Diving lures, vibes, and spinnerbaits will all produce results, although their colour preference may change day by day. While being quite an aggressive fish, slower retrieves often get more bites.
Trolling for yellowbelly
Trolling deep rocky banks in both impoundments and rivers is another effective way to target yellowbelly. Getting divers close to the bottom is key to consistent captures. Using a fish finder while trolling will help identify underwater structures, rises and drop offs which will help to prevent snagging and selecting the right lure.
What bait to use for yellowbelly?
Yellowbelly can be caught fishing baits close to structure. Worms, shrimps and yabbies will all attract bites. A simple light trace and sinker rig or running ball sinker rig is all that's needed. While fishing large snags, a float can be used to keep baits from getting caught up.
Hot tip: Yellowbelly can bite very subtly at times, check baits frequently to ensure its still there.
