Trout Fishing Gear

Trout can be found in a variety of different habitats from small trickling streams to large open reservoirs. They are very seasonal feeders often ignoring other food sources to take advantage of seasonal insect hatches. Trout will often use their camouflage patterns to remain unseen in open stretches of water, although they will happily hide close to or under structure where available.

Small diving minnows 40-70mm in length will often draw aggressive reaction bites, especially in fast moving water. Having lures rigged with chemically sharpened hooks will also greatly increase hook up rates.

A great plastic to use for trout is the 2.5inch T-tail grub. Rigged as lightly as possible on a #1 jig head, these plastics can be fished a variety of ways depending on the environment. The small wriggling tail is irresistible to feeding fish.

Choosing flies to match seasonal insect and larvae hatches is a great starting point in fly selection. Take a wide selection of local imitations in both wet and dry flies to match the hatch on the day. Fly rods in the 2-4wt range are perfect for both stream and open water fishing.
