Murray Cod Fishing

Murray Cod can be targeted in both rivers as well as stocked impoundments. They're a very structure orientated fish preferring to shelter around snags, ledges, holes, weed beds and eddies. Casting lures for Murray Cod is an exciting technique that allows anglers to thoroughly target likely areas. Lures such as spinnerbaits, bibbed hardbodies, swimbaits and surface lures are all popular options, with surface fishing visually showcasing their aggressive strikes.

Trolling for Murray cod is an effective way to fish large stretches of river or impoundments that would otherwise take too long to cast. Done in conjunction with a fish finder, trolling helps to paint a picture of the areas and identify spots to fish later. Large bibbed divers work best in this situation when the diving depth is matched to the area you're fishing. Alternate between loud rattles and silent lures.

Murray Cod are opportunistic feeders that can be caught on a wide variety of baits. Popular choices include yabbies, shrimps, worms, bardi grubs and even cubes of cheese! Rigs should include a 4/0-7/0 circle hook, 40-60lb trace, a swivel and sinker. Fish close to snags or in deeper holes.

Cod can grow to a seriously large size so tackle needs to be up to the task. A medium baitcast or spin combo in the 6-10kg range spooled with 20-40lb braid will put the brakes on most cod. 40-60lb leader will also help deal with their abrasive mouths and rubbing on snags.
