Murray Cod Fishing
Not only is the murray cod the largest freshwater fish in Australia, it’s also long-lived predator species that can be quite aggressive and territorial. To catch this fella, you’re going to need some good fishing gear. Choose from our hand-selected range of reels, lures and tackle for murray cod fishing or head in store to talk to one of our BCF’ing experts.
Where to find Murray Cod?
Murray Cod can be targeted in both rivers as well as stocked impoundments. They're a very structure orientated fish preferring to shelter around snags, ledges, holes, weed beds and eddies. Cod can be caught year-round but are subject to seasonal state-wide ‘no fishing' closures. Check in with fisheries for more information.
What are the best lures for Murray Cod?
Casting lures for Murray Cod is an exciting technique that allows anglers to thoroughly target likely areas. Lures such as spinnerbaits, bibbed hardbodies, swimbaits and surface lures are all popular options, with surface fishing visually showcasing their aggressive strikes.
Hot tip: Cod will often have multiple strikes at a lure before getting hooked. If a hit is felt, don't panic, keep working the lure and they will often strike again. How to troll for Murray Cod?
Trolling for Murray cod is an effective way to fish large stretches of river or impoundments that would otherwise take too long to cast. Done in conjunction with a fish finder, trolling helps to paint a picture of the areas and identify spots to fish later. Large bibbed divers work best in this situation when the diving depth is matched to the area you're fishing. Alternate between loud rattles and silent lures.
What is the best bait for Murray Cod?
What fishing tackle gear do I need to catch Murray Cod?
Cod can grow to a seriously large size so tackle needs to be up to the task. A medium baitcast or spin combo in the 6-10kg range spooled with 20-40lb braid will put the brakes on most cod. 40-60lb leader will also help deal with their abrasive mouths and rubbing on snags.
