Giant Trevally Fishing Gear
Catching a fish that can grow to be longer than some people are tall, you’re going to need some great fishing gear. At BCF, we’ve hand-picked a range of the fishing gear for GT fishing. Shop Shimano and Daiwa reels along with NOMAD and Halco lures to land a fish that has reached cult status in many sport fishing circles.
Where can I find giant trevally?
Giant Trevally (GT's) can be found around reefs, bommies, headlands, estuaries, jetties, rock walls and many other man-made structures. In smaller sizes, GT's tend to hang in large schools, whereas the larger fish tend to hang in pairs or more commonly solo. GT's are an ambush predator that will often sit in areas of high current to gain an advantage over smaller baitfish.
Hot tip: When it comes to GT's, no run = no fun. What lures to use for trevally?
Large GT's like big lures that make a lot of commotion. Stickbaits and cup-faced poppers are by far the most popular presentations. Cast around bait schools or big pressure edges, GT's just can't resist. Smaller GT's are a lot less fussy, happy to take just about any form of lure as long as it's moving fast. Plastics, metal spinners, vibes, surface lures, stick baits and minnows will all get bites.
Hot tip: Upgrading terminal tackle is a must when targeting GTs.What do GT's eat?
While GT's can be caught on dead bait at times, livebaits are far more effective on fish of all sizes. Live mullet, herring, garfish, tailor, tuna and scad will all get eaten. Depending on the size fish being targeted, circle hooks are a great option to hook the fish in the corner of the mouth and ensure a safe release.
What tackle gear do I need for GT fishing?
GT's have a reputation for being one of the hardest fighting fish in the ocean and it's not far from the truth. They're dirty fighters that will run hard for structure in a bid to win their freedom. This means tackle needs to be well and truly on the heavier side even if only small GT's are being targeted. For the big fellas, 80-120lb braid, 100-200lb leader and PE8-10 rods are good options to give them some stick.
