Mosquito Repellent & Insect Protection
Living in Australia, we know how our time outside can be ruined by flying insects and other creepy crawlies biting us and leaving us itchy and frustrated, swatting the air or slapping our own skin to get rid of them, but armed with mosquito repellent and other insect protection, we may just be able to relax and enjoy the great outdoors.
What is the most effective mosquito repellent?
The best mosquito repellent will differ from one person to the next based on several contributing factors. Most importantly, those with sensitive skin may opt for a repellent that is not as effective as others but provides a lower skin irritation while others may opt for one that doesn't have such a strong odour. At BCF, our range of Bushman's Insect Repellent is available in both gel and aerosol with sunscreen and DEET-free for a natural alternative.
What are the alternatives to aerosol insect repellent?
There are a few alternatives to the aerosol cans of mosquito repellent that can still help protect you against insects while camping. The most common alternate method is with citronella. Whether this be in a candle, coil, or sticks, burning citronella repels mosquitoes while still providing a pleasant floral scent perfect for social settings. Bug zappers are also an effective method with the UV drawing the insect's attention. These zappers come in several power options including battery operated, solar powered or electricity. At BCF, we also have a range of mosquito nets that range from a small size to simply protect your head to hanging nets that range up to queen size. The net is made from ultra-fine polyester mesh, so your vision is not impaired, and no insects can get in. It's a perfect mosquito net for camping, fishing or even at home.
What are some insect protection tips for camping?
To avoid insects and mosquitoes as best you can while camping, it's important to understand where you are likely to find them. For example, mosquitoes use water as their breeding ground, so it's not recommended to set up camp near any wet environments. Additionally, keeping your tent zipped closed can certainly help keep any unwanted bugs and creepy crawlies out. A lot nowadays will have two layers of protection, offering a mesh window and door as well as canvas or polyester for privacy. This means that you can unzip the privacy door or window but keep the mesh one closed for airflow. Keeping lights off when you can and storing your food properly in a fridge freezer or icebox will also help to not attract the attention of bugs and flying insects.
