What is a tie-down strap?
Tie-down straps are an innovative tool used when transporting equipment. They provide security and a safer means of transport and can be used on all loads great and small. Most commonly known as ratchet straps or simply tie downs, they often include some form of tensioning device which allows greater pressure and overall security to be acquired. Extremely useful for everyone from boat lovers, camping enthusiasts and tradies, tie-downs make light work of hitching boats to trailers, fastening a full load of camping gear in place or ensuring the work ute remains neat and tidy while also meeting safety regulations.
What are the different types of tie-down straps?
Tie-downs come in a variety of different types, lengths, and weight ratings that all play a role in securing your items and making sure you get to and from your destination safely and with everything intact. All tie-downs have been designed with the same purpose in mind, but each is slightly different with its own distinctive benefits.
Ratchet strap
As the name suggests a ratchet strap comes equipped with a mechanical ratchet that is used to deliver huge amounts of pressure to your load and keep everything firmly secure. Simple and convenient to use, they are constructed from durable materials and make an ideal choice for heavy loads such as boats and box trailers.
- Available in various webbing length and thicknesses
- Weather and moisture resistant
- Weight rated from 340 – 500kg
- Meets Aus./NZ Standards
Cam Buckle Straps
Cam buckle straps are generally lighter and easier to use than their ratchet strap counterparts. They have a unique design that is tightened using hand strength, this limits the amount of pressure that can be applied but also makes them ideal for securing fragile goods as well as a perfect strapping solution for light to medium loads such as camping equipment, surfboards and fishing gear.
- Tightens and releases quickly and easily
- High-strength polyester webbing
- Equipped with rubber paddle base for added protection
- Weight rated from 225 – 550kg
- Meets Aus./NZ standards
Cargo Net
Cargo nets are an essential item for the ute owners out there. Legally required in some states, they ensure your tray stays secure, while also allowing maximum storage space. Normally square or rectangular in shape, a cargo net is made using adjustable netting material and durable snap hooks.
- Suitable for utes, cars, and vans
- Fully adjustable
- Ideal for the transportation of both domestic and commercial goods
- Perfect for covering loads on trailers and in the back of utes
Bungee Strap
The ever-reliable bungee strap needs no introduction. A must have accessory for almost every family, the bungee strap has been used as a lightweight suspension and tie-down option for many decades. Ideal for securing tarps and canopies, they are made using one or more elastic strands and can either have plastic or metal hooks on each end.
- Available in a range of lengths so every situation is covered
- With either metal or plastic hooks for durability
- Most often used to secure items without the need to tie a knot
Do tie-down straps come with different load ratings?
Tie-down straps are all manufactured with a specific load limit in mind. Depending on the thickness of the straps and ruggedness of the components, they can be rated to as much as 2000kg. It is important for you to consider the bulk weight of your load and ensure your tie-down strap is rated to suit. This will help prevent any incidents to yourself and others, as well as ensure your load stays in one piece.
