Jockey Wheels
The humble jockey wheel is one item that's often overlooked, although it may be small in stature, the benefits of using one far outweigh its size. You will very quickly realise the importance of a jockey wheel next time you try to manoeuvre a trailer around the backyard or at the boat ramp without one.
What is a jockey wheel?
A jockey wheel is a simple piece of equipment that attaches to any form of trailer. Whether boat trailer, box trailer or even a camper trailer, a jockey wheel which makes light work of lifting and lowering the trailer coupling to fit comfortably over your tow-ball. Jockey wheels also help to stabilize the front section of your trailer so once removed from the towing vehicle it is easier to handle as you take it to and from its required location. Whether you are hooking the tinny up for a day on the water or taking the family away for a wicked weekend in the camper, a jockey wheel is sure to make life easier and help you to avoid injuries.
What are the different types of jockey wheel's?
Jockey wheels come in a variety of types with different wheel sizes, wheel materials and mounting options available to suit different trailers and applications. The most common jockey wheels are your standard clamp-on and Swing based models. Swing based jockey wheels are simple to use and provide flexibility with its installation, using U bolts (sold separately) to hold it in place. Standard clamp-on jockey wheels are an inexpensive option that can be used for a diverse range of trailer needs. A trailer clamp (sold separately) is needed to hold your jockey wheel in place.
How do I choose a jockey wheel?
Although they may all be constructed with the same purpose in mind, there is definitely no one size fits all when it comes to jockey wheels. With varying tyre type, lift lengths and weight ratings it's important that you select the correct jockey wheel for your own individual needs.
- Tyre type – Tyres are available in two different types, with both solid and pneumatic tyres handling terrain differently. For sand, mud and other forms of loose ground pneumatic tyres are the best option, while roads and other tightly packed surfaces are better suited for solid tyres.
- Lift length – Normally ranging from 200mm to 250mm the lift length allows you to safely and securely attach the trailer coupling with your tow-ball. It's important to remember manoeuvring at full extension can result in instability to the structure of the entire trailer.
- Weight rating – The lifting capacity or weight rating is extremely important when choosing a jockey wheel. Most start with a rating of 300 – 350kg, however heavy-duty models are needed when dealing with larger caravans or boats.
