Marine Radios & Communication Devices
The marine radio makes for a simple and convenient form of communication that is an essential piece of safety equipment for many vessels. Used for contacting marine rescue and other boats in your current area, they are a legal requirement on all vessels that travel more than 5 nautical miles from the mainland. Whether you are heading offshore to wet a line for some tasty snapper, taking the family for a ride into the deep blue, or maybe even a spot of whale watching, some form of communications device is required to ensure everyone has a safe and care-free day on the water. Explore our range of communication devices online or head in-store to talk to one of our friendly and knowledgeable BCF'ing experts today.
Handheld vs fix mounted marine radio
The marine radio comes in handheld and fix mounted varieties, both with their own distinct benefits that make them a perfect inclusion to your onboard safety kit. The versatility and portable nature of hand-held marine radios has seen them quickly become the most popular form of communications device. Fix mounted models work very similar to their handheld counterparts except as the name suggests they are permanently fixed to your vessel. Separated into two unique parts, an antenna to broadcast the signal as well as the radio itself, fix mounted models have a much larger range due to the longer antenna and provide a far superior battery life.
Do marine radios come in different frequency types?
There are two main frequencies used in Australia for all Marine radio applications. Below we will take a look at each of them to find out which type will best suit your needs.
27mhz
The perfect entry level marine radio. 27mhz radios have been around for an age and are nowadays typically considered to be more of an inshore alternative. They are a handy inclusion to any vessel as you don't need any licence or qualification to operate. 27mhz radios typically have a maximum range between 10-15 nautical miles.
VHF
The VHF (very high frequency) radio is not only more powerful than its 27mhz counterpart but also comes with better sound quality. Suited for long distance use either outdoors or indoors (making them quite capable in both inshore and offshore environments), VHF radios have a maximum range of approximately 20 nautical miles, with the added benefit of being monitored by rescue organisations for even greater safety precautions.
