Rod Holders
Most vessels come standard with some form of built-in rod holder located around the gunwale. Although these may be useful, the fact that they are fixed in one location and normally constructed from plastic means they cannot be moved and can be quite brittle. The purchase of aftermarket rod holders is a great addition to any fishing boat, providing greater versatility and hopefully helping to put more fish on the deck.
Why use a rod holder?
The humble rod holder may not be the most extravagant addition to your vessel, but they sure do come in handy. Making for an invaluable boating tool that any fisherman will find a use for, you can keep your precious fishing rods secured while underway, make sure that the floor space of your boat stays tidy and uncluttered, or even use them as a hands-free trolling solution when lure and bait fishing. A rod holder is sure to make your next boating adventure more enjoyable and hopefully more successful.
Do rod holders come in different types?
Rod holders come in a variety of different types to help with the various mounting options available. They have all been designed with the purpose of holding your rods in place and avoiding nasty and expensive accidents, but each is slightly different. Below we will take a look at each type and what they are used for.
Flush mount
Flush mounted rod holders would be the most common and possibly the most convenient. You can position them wherever you want and as the name suggests they sit flush to the gunwale eliminating on-board clutter.
Rail mount
The advantage of rail mount rod holders is that they are completely removable and do not require the drilling of holes into your pride and joy. Reposition your rod holder to any grabrail or change location from side to side in no time.
Clamp-on
Clamp-on rod holders make for a handy storage solution to any vessel. An adjustable swivel design means it can be set to a variety of positions, with a C-clamp locking mechanism that installs and removes in a breeze. Constructed from lightweight yet durable plastic that will not be affected from UV or salt exposure.
3-way
If trolling up gamefish such as marlin or tuna is your thing or maybe you prefer dropping a spread of baits for the likes of whiting and snapper, 3-way rod holders can be extremely useful. Constructed from strong and durable stainless steel that can take the abuse of much larger fish species and fits comfortably into any standard rod holder. The 3-way allows you to cover a wide area, with multiple baits or lure presentations simultaneously. Angled to either port or starboard side (left or right) so you can fish each side of the boat with ease.
Vertical rod storage
Not only a clever way to keep your fishing rods safe and sound in the boat, they also make for a ripper addition to the home garage, fishing room or man cave. Available in both 5 and 3 rod configurations. These rod holders are made from durable plastic with soft rubber inserts, this helps to minimise scratches and damage that can result in a broken rod.
Trolling with a rod holder
For fishing on the troll, many anglers will use one or more rod holders to allow multiple baits to be presented at the one time. Running three separate outfits is extremely common and makes for a nice spread, while leaving your hands free to steer and control the boat. Rod holder placement is crucial when running multiple setups and must be considered along with running depth and distance of baits to avoid line tangles. Flush mounted or 3-way rod holders would be the best trolling options as their ruggedness keeps fishing gear safe and secure.
