One of the best reels for beginners, ‘egg beaters’ (as they’re commonly known) offer easy casting with plenty of power and are among the most popular in the industry. In Sammy’s wise words -
But, he does have a simple way to help you get the most out of your cast so that you get good distance and accuracy.
How to Cast a Spinning Reel: The Simple Way
Before you start casting, make sure you have your drag set. The last thing you want to have happen is to be casting away, hook that fish of a lifetime and have him get off because your drag is too tight or too loose.
- Starting with the setup, the first step is to have your reel stem positioned between your ring and middle finger
- To cast, bring the bail arm to the top of the reel and flick it up
- At the same time, grab the line with your pointer finger
- When you’re ready to cast, grab the base of the rod with your other hand
- With your other hand, hold the base of the rod
- Take the rod over your shoulder at about 45 degrees
- Follow through and let go of the line pointing to where you want your line to land
- Flick the bail arm back down to secure the line
EXPERT TIP
Casting with your dominant hand can give you more control over the rod while your non-dominant hand can reel in the catch – but always choose what’s more comfortable.
